Origin and history

The Cornuel Bridge, also known as the Cochet Bridge, was built in the 3rd quarter of the 18th century (circa 1757) to span the June River. Located on the border of the communes of Bouray-sur-Juine and Lardy (Essonne, Île-de-France), it marks the administrative boundary between these two territories. Its architecture, characterized by a single arch, reflects the road construction techniques of the time.

The building is attributed to the architect Boulanger (or Boullanger according to the sources), master of the project. Although reconstructed identically later, its original structure dates from the mid-18th century. The bridge was listed as a Historic Monument on May 6, 1980 (or March 6 according to some sources), recognizing its heritage value. It now belongs to the public domain and is managed by the municipalities concerned.

From a historical point of view, this bridge illustrates the importance of river and road infrastructure in the territorial organisation of the Île-de-France under the Ancien Régime. June, a tributary of the Essonne, played a key role in local trade, especially agricultural trade. Bridges such as Cornuel facilitated movement between villages and helped to structure the rural old age network.
