Origin and history

The bridge of Artigues, also called the Lartigue bridge, spans the Osse, a tributary of the Gélise, between the communes of Beaumont and Larressingle in Gers. Mentioned for the first time in 1432, it was already a key crossing point on Via Podiensis, one of the roads leading to Santiago de Compostela. Its reconstruction in 1724, in a neo-Roman style, was authorized by a decree of the king's council, emphasizing its local and regional importance. The bridge, now too narrow for vehicles, remains a major pedestrian site on the GR65 and the European E3 trail.

The current ochre stone structure is distinguished by four arches of various dimensions, the largest of which is 7.90 metres open. The roadway, 2.90 metres wide for 29.30 metres long, was repaired between 1954 and 1957, especially for its balustrade. In 1998, the bridge was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the title of Chemins de Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle in France, before being listed as a historic monument in 2017. Recent work (2016) has improved its watertightness and surroundings, with a parking lot and a development of the banks.

Managed by the communes of Beaumont and Larressingle, the bridge is now a symbol of the Gersian heritage. The Artiga association has been taking care of its development since 2004, while its location on a jacquary route makes it a place of passage for pilgrims and hikers. Its history reflects both its past utilitarian role and its present cultural dimension, between medieval memory and contemporary preservation.

Future

The Pont d'Artigues is one of the 71 monuments as well as 7 portions of paths have been inscribed since 1998 on the UNESCO World Heritage List under the official title of "Chemins de Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle en France".

It is on the way to Via Podiensis, or "Voy du Puy", from Puy-en-Velay to the Basque village of Ostabat, where it joins via Turonensis and via Lemovicensis gathered shortly before.
