Origin and history
The bridge of Pimelles is a building located in the department of Yonne, on the town of Pimelles, in Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Built in the 18th century, it is distinguished by its three square arches and its moulure parapet. This bridge illustrates the construction techniques and hydrological concerns of the time, reflecting the efforts of the Generality of Waters and Forests to channel and control rivers.
The bridge was listed as historic monuments on June 15, 2001, recognizing its heritage value. It is now owned by the municipality of Pimelles. Although its exact location is approximate, there remains a representative example of the hydraulic infrastructure developed under the Old Regime, in a context where water resource management was essential for local agricultural and industrial activities.
At the time of its construction, Burgundy was a region marked by a rural and artisanal economy. Bridges, like Pimelles, played a crucial role in local exchanges and territorial development. They facilitated the transport of goods, including timber and agricultural products, while allowing for better movement of people. The Royal Institution of Waters and Forests supervised these developments to optimize the exploitation of natural resources and strengthen central authority.
