Origin and history
The Varieras Bridge, located in Perols-sur-Vézère in Corrèze, is a medieval work dating back to the Carolingian period. This granite bridge, inscribed in the Historic Monuments in 1991, has a unique arch in low arch, supplemented by three side passages of water, two of which are still functional. Its light-backed donkey structure and its avant-bec in carved granite blocks illustrate the construction techniques of the time.
The town of Pérols-sur-Vézère, integrated into the Millevaches Regional Nature Park, is crossed by the Vézère and its tributaries. The Varieras bridge, taken by a rural road, probably served as a strategic crossing in this mountainous Limousin area. Its inscription in 1991 underlines its heritage importance, although its original pavement, once paved, has now disappeared.
The surrounding territory, marked by a scattered rural occupation, preserves traces of an ancient history, with toponyms of Gallo-Roman origin. The bridge is part of a landscape where forests and semi-natural environments dominate (73.2% of the territory in 2018), reflecting a traditional economy linked to agriculture and the exploitation of local resources. The area, exposed to a mountain climate, has also undergone specific architectural adaptations, such as the thatched roof houses of the neighbouring hamlet of Varieras.
No specific information is available on the sponsors or the exact circumstances of its construction. However, its robust design and partial conservation status suggest a prolonged use, probably linked to local exchanges and the serving of surrounding hamlets, such as Barsanges, formerly a common independent before its attachment in 1844.
The Varieras bridge is now owned by the municipality of Pérols-sur-Vézère. Its present state and accessibility are not detailed in the sources, but its inscription in the title of Historical Monuments guarantees its preservation as a witness to the medieval and Carolingian history of Limousin.
