Pont des Esclapes (cad. G 782, 783): classification by decree of 14 March 1939

Origin and history

The Esclapes bridge, located in the commune of Fréjus in the department of Var, is a remarkable structure in arches with elongated arches of about 50 cm. The upper track is covered with blocks held by a mortar, and the whole rests on three arches. To the west, the batteries are reinforced by semicircular foothills, an architectural technique typical of the durable constructions of this period.

Ranked Historic Monument by order of 14 March 1939, this bridge bears witness to the local engineering and the importance of infrastructures in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. Its location, reported at approximate address 1877 Chemin dit Carraire de Madame Reverdit, reflects a rural or peri-urban location, integrated with the historic landscape of Fréjus. No additional information is available on its exact origin, sponsorship or initial use.

The region, marked by a history rich in Roman exchanges and constructions, has seen the development of works of art designed to facilitate travel and trade over the centuries. Bridges, such as the Esclapes, played a key role in connecting territories and supporting local economic activities, including agriculture and trade. Their preservation today makes it possible to understand the construction techniques and infrastructure needs of past times.
