Origin and history
The Henri-IV de Châtellerault Bridge is a monument located in the city of the same name, in New Aquitaine. Built between the late 16th and early 17th centuries, it crosses the Vienne, a tributary of the Loire. This bridge is part of a period of urban infrastructure development, marked by increasing traffic and trade needs.
At that time, bridges played a central role in the organization of cities, facilitating economic and social exchanges. Châtellerault, like other cities in the region, benefited from its geographical position to develop craft and commercial activities. Works such as the Henri-IV bridge made it possible to connect neighbourhoods and secure movements, while symbolizing local or royal power.
