Origin and history
The Pont-Périt de Saint-Hilaire-le-Château is an architectural vestige of the Gallo-Roman period, located in the Creuse department, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. This work, whose construction dates back to ancient times, bears witness to Roman engineering and its integration into local communication networks. It was originally designed to serve the Sanctuary of Puy Lautard, a place of worship probably frequented by local populations and pilgrims of the time.
Ranked Historic Monument by order of April 10, 1995, the bridge is protected with the adjacent communal road, over a distance of 100 metres on either side of the creek. This protection also covers the surrounding parcels (C 928, 842, 839, 840), highlighting the heritage importance of the site. Today, the bridge belongs to the commune of Saint-Hilaire-le-Château, although its accessibility to the public (visits, events) is not specified in the available sources.
Geographical data indicate an approximate location near the Moulin de Lardiller, with a priori satisfactory accuracy (note 6/10). The site is documented by sources such as Monumentum and the Merimée bases, which confirm its ancient origin and its historical role in serving the neighbouring sanctuary. No information is available on possible characters or sponsors related to its construction or use in the Gallo-Roman era.
