Roman bridge on the river Arnon (cad. not cadastralized; public domain): registration by decree of 16 June 1986
Origin and history
The Roman bridge of Culan, located in the Cher department in the Centre-Val de Loire region, is a historical monument whose origins date back to ancient times, although its present structure is mainly medieval. It consists of four arches in the middle, supported by three piles of cut stone, with triangular fore-beeks and trapeze back-beeks. The roadway, slightly curved on the back of the donkey, is constructed in rubble, without visible ornaments. This bridge, inscribed in the Historical Monuments since 1986, illustrates medieval construction techniques while integrating older elements.
Originally located on the old road between La Châtre and Montluçon, the bridge underwent several major changes. Reconstructed in the 17th century, it was restored again in the 19th century, adapting its structure to the changing needs of the channels of communication. Although called "Roman" by its name, its current architecture more reflects medieval and modern times. The materials used, such as bellows and cutting stone, as well as the shape of the beaks, are characteristic of medieval bridges, designed to withstand flooding and facilitate the flow of water.
The bridge crosses the Arnon River and belongs to the municipal public domain of Culan. Its registration in 1986 as a Historic Monument underlines its heritage importance, both for its history and for its construction technique. Although the sources do not mention specific characters or events related to its construction, its role in the local road network makes it a witness to regional exchanges throughout the centuries. Today, it remains a key element of the historical landscape of Culan, accessible to the public and managed by the municipality.
