Origin and history

The monument called Pont Saint-Michel and bridges on the Cosson called chastrés or carttrains is located in Vineuil, in the department of Loir-et-Cher (41), in the region Centre-Val de Loire. These bridges, although poorly documented in available sources, are identified as Historic Monuments, highlighting their heritage importance. Their exact location, near Blois and near Saint-Gervais-la-Forêt, suggests a historical role in local exchanges, possibly linked to the crossing of the Cosson, a tributary of the Beuvron.

In the regional context of the Centre-Val de Loire, medieval or modern-day bridges often played a key role in communication networks, facilitating trade, military movements or pilgrimages. Vineuil, close to Blois – the former capital of the Counts of Blois and then royal residence – could have benefited from these infrastructures to connect the surrounding territories. The so-called chastred bridges (or carriages) may evoke an origin related to the influence of the city of Chartres or to specific construction techniques, although this hypothesis is not confirmed by available sources.
