Origin and history

The bridge over the Goire de Confolens, located in the city of Confolens (Charente, Nouvelle-Aquitaine), dates from the Middle Ages. It provided a strategic access to the historic district, rue du Soleil and the local castle. Its structure consists of two arches in the middle, supported by a middle pile with a triangular beak upstream and a rectangular protruding downstream. This pile also supports a triangular refuge, characteristic of medieval bridges designed to house pedestrians in the event of storm or flooding.

Ranked Historic Monument by decree of 13 November 1973, the bridge is now owned by the commune of Confolens. Its listing in the Historical Monuments Inventory highlights its heritage and architectural importance. Although its exact location is estimated as "a priori satisfactory" (note 6/10), it remains a key evidence of medieval urban planning in the region, linking major urban areas such as the castle and old streets.

The bridge illustrates medieval construction techniques, with its arches in the middle of the hanger and reinforced pile, designed to withstand the currents of the Goir. Its historical role was both practical – facilitating travel – and defensive, integrating elements such as shelter. These features are a representative example of the Middle Ages urban bridges in Poitou-Charentes, an area marked by a dense network of rivers and river crossings.
