Origin and history

The bridge over the Lauquet, located at Registryil in the department of Aude, was built in the 3rd quarter of the 18th century to replace a ford that became impassable after repeated flooding. By 1724, the inhabitants demanded its construction, but it was only in 1761, after several serious accidents, that the project was finally adopted by the Assiette (diocesan assembly). The work, which was listed as a historical monument in 1948, is distinguished by its three arches: two in the middle of the hanger frame a central arch in basket handle, with piles with rounded beaks to withstand flooding.

The structure reflects a technical design adapted to hydraulic stresses. The fully-equipped vaults, large block parapets and extended abutments connected by cylindrical walls illustrate local expertise. Avoidances, reduced to small trapezes, contrast with battery beaks, while corbelling spurs enhance stability. This bridge symbolizes both a response to the practical needs of the inhabitants and an architectural heritage of the 18th century in Languedoc.

Before its construction, Registryil's ford, which was regularly submerged, posed a danger to the population and trade. The annual requests of the inhabitants, made by a delegate to the assembly of the diocese, underline the strategic importance of this axis. Frequent flooding and accidents have finally accelerated the decision, making this bridge a marker of community resilience to natural hazards. Today, there remains a material testimony of this history, protected for its heritage and technical value.

The bridge is located west of the village of Registryil, on the eponymous road (1 Chemin du Pont Sur le Lauquet). Its inscription in 1948 covers the entire structure, including its hydraulic components and parapets. Although the sources mention an approximate location (map detail noted 5/10), its administrative address and Insee code (11169) clearly links it to the municipality, in the present Occitanie region.
