City gate (former): inscription by order of 19 October 1927

Origin and history

The Portail Bas d'Angles is a 17th century fortified gate located in the commune of Angles, in the Tarn department (Occitanian region). This monument represents the only remaining standing element of the old enclosure that once protected the city. Its architecture bears witness to the fortification techniques used at the time to secure agglomerations.

Ranked as Historic Monuments since October 19, 1927, the Lower Gate illustrates the strategic importance of urban gates in the defensive organization of cities. These structures were used not only to control entrances and exits, but also to symbolize the power and protection offered to the inhabitants. In modern times, cities like Angles, although less exposed to conflict than in the Middle Ages, kept these books as markers of their history and identity.

Today, the Lower Gate remains a material testimony of the fortified past of Angles. Its preservation allows to study urban evolutions and architectural adaptations between the seventeenth century and the contemporary era. The monument, owned by the municipality, is accessible to the public, offering a tangible link to local and regional history.
