Origin and history

The Jacobins de Carcassonne gate, built in the last quarter of the eighteenth century, was erected according to the plans of architect Dolbeau. This monument, originally named Porte Saint-Louis, is distinguished by its carved shields: one exterior, with the King's weapons, measuring ten feet high by nine broad, framed with bay branches and adorned with the cords of Saint Louis and Saint Michel; the other interior, more modest, carrying the weapons of the city surmounted by a comtal crown.

The structure also includes a wall in return, decorated with a cul-de-four fountain with basin. This portal, classified as Historic Monument, reflects the civil architecture of the time, mixing royal and local symbols. Its inscription in the inventory of Historic Monuments dates from 1926 for the gate itself, then from 1939 for the adjoining wall and its fountain.

Located boulevard du Commander-Roumens in Carcassonne (Aude, Occitanie), this monument belongs to the commune. Its location, although documented, enjoys a geographical accuracy considered fair (note 5/10). The photographs available, such as those of Didier Descouens under Creative Commons license, allow you to appreciate its architectural and decorative details.
