Portail du Salvateur : inscription by order of 31 October 1941

Origin and history

The Portail du Salvateur is a monument located in Toul, in the department of Meurthe-et-Moselle, in the Grand Est region. This portal, whose exact function and architectural origin are not specified in the available sources, was included in the inventory of Historic Monuments by order of 31 October 1941. It is now owned by a private company and is located at 4 rue Liouville, in downtown Toul.

Toul, an ancient episcopal city and stronghold, has had a rich history, particularly linked to its strategic role at the borders of the Duchy of Lorraine. Monuments such as the Salvator Portal testify to the importance of architectural heritage in this region, where Gothic, Renaissance and military influences are mixed. Although the details of its construction or initial use were lacking, its inscription in 1941 highlighted its heritage value in a context where the preservation of urban historic elements became a national priority.
