Origin and history

The portal of the Saint-Aignan fairground, located in the municipality of the same name in the region Centre-Val de Loire, dates from the seventeenth century. This stone monument, characterized by its bosses and its arch in basket handle, is embellished with pilasters and surmounted by a semicircular pediment. A moulded cornice and side walls complete its structure, while a small square door pierces the left wall. Although its original destination remains unknown, it served to define a space dedicated to local fairs and markets, reflecting the economic activity of the time.

The construction of this portal is probably linked to that of the portals of the convent of Bernardines and of the hospital of Saint-Aignan, suggesting a common origin under the impulse of the Duke of Beauvilliers. These buildings, belonging to the same architectural family, reflect the influence of local sponsors and the importance of public infrastructure in the 17th century urban and commercial organization. The portal, inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of December 2, 1946, thus illustrates the architectural and historical heritage of the city, marked by its role in collective life.

Stylistic details, such as bosses and semi-circular pediment, recall the classical aesthetic channels of the time, while its location at 13 rue Maurice-Berteaux (or 46 Rue Maurice Berteaux according to GPS sources) makes it a visible landmark in the urban landscape. The accuracy of its location is estimated at 6/10, indicating a satisfactory but perfectable approximation. Today, although its original use has disappeared, the portal remains an emblematic vestige of the commercial and social practices of Saint-Aignan under the Ancien Régime.
