Porte, attached to the Tower of the Clock: inscription by decree of 17 February 1928

Origin and history

La Porte, adjacent to the Tower of the Clock, is a monument located in the commune of Jouques, in the department of Bouches-du-Rhône. This monument, inscribed by ministerial decree on February 17, 1928, is part of the historical heritage of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. It is now owned by the commune of Jouques, although its current use (visit, rental, accommodation) is not specified in the available sources.

Monuments of this type, often linked to medieval or modern defensive or urban architecture, played a key role in the organization of provençal villages. They served as a point of control, a symbol of communal power or a time marker thanks to their clock. In Jouques, as in other communes in the region, these structures reflect local history, marked by agricultural, artisanal activities and a social fabric organized around the village community. The Tower of the Clock, often associated with gates or ramparts, could also speed up the daily life of the inhabitants with its ringtones.
