Porte de Bretagne : inscription by order of 3 June 1932
Origin and history
The Porte de Bretagne, located in Montchauvet in the Yvelines, is an architectural vestige dating from the 1st quarter of the 13th century. This monument, inscribed in the inventory of Historic Monuments by decree of 3 June 1932, illustrates the medieval heritage of the Île-de-France region. Although its precise location is estimated as "passable" (note 5/10), it remains a point of historical interest located at 1 Rue de la Porte de Bretagne.
The Porte de Bretagne is now owned by the commune of Montchauvet. Its state of conservation and accessibility (open or closed to visit) are not specified in available sources. The data come mainly from the Merimée database and Monumentum, supplemented by approximate geographical information from GPS coordinates.
In the 13th century, fortified gates like Brittany played a key role in defending villages and controlling access. In a region such as Ile-de-France, marked by growing agricultural activity and trade, these structures also reflected local power and community organisation. Their preservation provides an overview of the construction techniques and strategic needs of the time.
