Origin and history
The Porte des Canonniers is a historic monument located in Saint-Quentin, in the department of Aisne, in the Hauts-de-France region. Built in 1687 thanks to a gift from King Louis XIV, it was part of the hotel of the company Canonniers-Arquebusiers of the city. Today, it is the only preserved vestige, bearing witness to the importance of local bourgeois militias in modern times.
The monument was listed as historic monuments in 1930, recognizing its heritage value. The gate is located at 21 rue des Canonniers, in downtown Saint-Quentin. Its architecture reflects 17th century military styles, a period marked by the strengthening of urban defences under the influence of royal power.
The company of the Canonniers-Arquebusiers of Saint-Quentin, founded long before 1687, played a key role in protecting the city. This bourgeois militia, composed of armed citizens, was responsible for local defence and public order. Louis XIV's donation to build this gate illustrates royal support for urban security initiatives in the provinces.
Historical sources, such as Georges Lecocq's (1874), documented the company's history from 1461 until its dissolution in 1790. The Canonniers' Gate thus remains a material testimony of this institution, which has now disappeared, but whose legacy persists in the urban landscape of Saint Quentin.
