Gate of the Petrons, at the entrance of the forest: inscription by decree of 7 September 1933
Origin and history
La Porte des Pétrons is a monument located in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, in the department of Yvelines in the Île-de-France region. This monument, whose exact period of construction is not specified in the available sources, is identified as a door marking the entrance to the forest. Its status as a Historic Monument was formalized by an additional listing, attested by an order dated 7 September 1933.
The location of the Petron Gate is subject to geographical inaccuracies according to available data. Although the official administrative address places her in Saint-Germain-en-Laye (code INSEE 78551), GPS coordinates suggest a proximity to the neighbouring town of Maisons-Laffitte, at 109 Rue de la Muette. This ambiguity reflects the challenges sometimes encountered in the exact location of ancient monuments, especially those located on the edge of forested areas or on the border between several communal territories.
Forest doors, such as that of the Petrons, historically played a role in the delimitation and protection of forested areas, often linked to cynegetic or forestry uses. In the context of Île-de-France, a region marked by a strong presence of state forests (such as those of Saint-Germain-en-Laye or Versailles), these works could also serve as checkpoints for access to forest resources, or as benchmarks for local activities such as hunting, reserved for the aristocracy or the crown. Their preservation reflects the heritage importance attached to these remains, even when their detailed history remains fragmented.
