Origin and history

The fortified gate north of Saint-Pal-de-Chalencon is part of the remains of the medieval fortifications of this commune located in Haute-Loire, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Although documents attest to the existence of Saint-Pal-de-Chalencon as early as 1034, the exact date of construction of the ramparts remains unknown. The remaining elements, including this door, seem to date back to the 14th century. Originally, five gates allowed access to the city, but only those in the north, south and west survived until today.

The northern gate is distinguished by its still visible mâchicoulis, although its crenelage has disappeared. Its arch, without mouldings or sculptures, presents a chamfer at the angles, highlighting its defensive simplicity. A discharge arch, surmounted by an archer, allowed direct access to the round path always present on the other side. Prolonged mâchicoulis and an oriental angle squad probably existed in the past. The house at the door, inside the ramparts, has a steep Gothic opening, a witness to the civil architecture of the time.

Classified as historical monuments by order of 23 September 1949, this gate illustrates the evolution of urban defensive systems in the Middle Ages. Its state of conservation, although altered by later additions such as surrounding dwellings, offers an overview of 14th century military and architectural techniques in Auvergne. The south gate, also preserved, and the door under the castle (registered in 1995) complete this remarkable defensive ensemble.
