Renaissance portal on the square north of the church: inscription by decree of 25 October 1962

Key figures

Jean de Lévis - Lord of Saint-Sauves Blazon present on the portico (1595).

Origin and history

The Renaissance Gate of Saint-Sauves-d'Auvergne is an architectural element of the 16th century, initially integrated into an old church or potentially to a demolished castle. When the present church was built in 1873, this portal was moved and re-educated on the village square. Its hybrid style combines late Gothic influences with typical Renaissance motifs, as evidenced by its sculptures and ornaments.

The gate, topped by a wall decorated with sculptures in use, is 1.90 meters high. It has an arch in basket cove decorated with foliage, while a central niche, framed with columnettes, has a bas-relief decoration (masks, chestnut leaves, corollas). A coat of arms appears there, that of Jean de Lévis, seigneur of Saint-Sauves from 1595. The lateral pilasters and the upper cornice incorporate various motifs: corollas, braided shields, fern leaves, and carved characters.

Ranked a Historical Monument by decree of October 25, 1962, this portal illustrates the artistic transition between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Its current location on the village square makes it an accessible heritage element, although its geographical accuracy is considered to be satisfactory a priori (note 6/10). The property belongs to the commune of Saint-Sauves-d'Auvergne, in Puy-de-Dôme.
