Origin and history
The Tuchan Post Office is a public building built in the first quarter of the 20th century, illustrating the evolution of postal buildings after the merger of the Post Office and Telegraph administrations in 1879. From the 1880s to the 1990s, these buildings were distinguished by a specific architecture, incorporating republican symbols such as the beams of liters and the French Republic inscription. This monument, located in the department of Aude, is a representative example, both in its structure and in its decor.
The building, square in shape, includes a floor on raised ground floor, covered with a single-rumped roof. Its main façade is marked by two bays in the middle of the hanger and two doors with curved impostes on the ground floor, while the floor, reserved for the housing of the receiver, is illuminated by windows with balconies. The side façades have curved openings on the ground floor and rectangular upstairs. A neat decor, including blue and yellow ceramic friezes, exposed bricks, and modern style ironwork grilles, enriches the whole.
The building has been listed as historic monuments since March 30, 1992, protecting its facades, roofs, exterior staircases, fence walls, and all its ironwork decoration. The protected elements also include window grilles, balconies, luminaire appliqués, and garden doors. This ranking underlines its heritage importance, both for its architecture and for its role in the history of postal services in France.
Designed by the departmental architect Vidal, with the collaboration of Mason Eugène Bénézis and Locksmith J.-L. Delpech, the Hotel des Postes in Tuchan embodies a period of modernization of public infrastructure. The materials used, such as sandstone, brick, and varnished ceramics, as well as the decorative motifs (sculpted palmettes, arabesques), reflect a desire to combine functionality and aesthetics, characteristic of the public buildings of the time.
Located at 27 Rue de la Poste in Tuchan, the building is now owned by the municipality. Its state of conservation and its decor make it a valuable testimony to the postal architecture of the early twentieth century, while illustrating the adaptation of Republican symbols in small rural communes. The accuracy of its location is estimated as fair, with an address confirmed by the Merimée data and GPS coordinates.
