Origin and history

The Hotel des Postes de Fontainebleau, built at the end of the 19th century, is an emblematic building designed to house the postal and telegraphic services of the city. His project was launched in 1892 after a meeting between President Sadi Carnot and the municipality, with a decree signing its construction on a land dependent on Diane's garden, near the castle. The plans were entrusted to architect Jean Boussard, and the works, begun in August 1893, were completed in November 1894, despite local debates about the absence of an external clock, never installed.

The construction, marked by technical constraints and aesthetic choices (such as the absence of telegraph turrets, replaced by three iron poles), is financed by the city and reimbursed by the State over 40 years. The building, made of bricks and stones, was inaugurated in 1894 in the presence of representatives of the State and the architect. Its central role in local life is highlighted by recurrent criticisms in the press, including the absence of clocks or reception conditions.

In the 20th century, the Hotel des Postes underwent extensions (like that of 1925 led by Albert-Louis Bray) and modernizations, including a major renovation in 2017 to improve reception and services. In 2024, it became part of the world heritage perimeter of Fontainebleau Castle, while remaining an active place for postal services. Its architecture and history reflect the evolution of communications and urban planning in Île-de-France.

The building is also a witness to the social debates of its time, as attested by the articles by Abeille de Fontainebleau on the working conditions of agents or the expectations of users. Despite aborted projects (the clock) or criticisms (lighting, heating), it remains a symbol of modernity for the city, linked to the history of the neighboring royal estate. Its recent inscription as a historical monument enshrines its heritage and architectural importance.
