Origin and history

The public well and the stone cross of Bierry-les-Belles-Fontaines are emblematic architectural elements of the local heritage. Dated from the 1st quarter of the 17th and 18th centuries, they bear witness to the importance of water points and religious symbols in the organization of villages of that time. Their presence in the central square reflects their social and practical role for the community.

This monument was included in the inventory of Historic Monuments by order of 3 February 1971, thus recognizing its heritage value. The identified contractor, TIRCUIT, contributed to its implementation, although little additional information was available on its intervention. Owned by the commune, this well and cross remain historical and cultural landmarks for Bierry-les-Belles-Fontaines.

The location of the monument, although noted as "passable" (level 5/10) in the databases, is specified at the following address: 10 Route de Montbard, in the department of l'Yonne (89). This department, integrated into the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region, is marked by a rich rural heritage, of which this well and cross constitute a representative example.
