Origin and history

The enclosure of the city of Semur-en-Auxois is a historical monument located in the Côte-d'Or department, in the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region. Although its exact construction period is not specified in the available sources, its architecture and defensive function suggest a medieval origin. The gate of the enclosure, an emblematic element of this heritage, was classified by ministerial decree on 24 March 1923, thus underlining its historical and architectural importance.

Semur-en-Auxois, like many medieval cities, developed around ramparts to protect its inhabitants from invasions and conflicts. These fora played a central role in urban organization, delineating inhabited space and ensuring the safety of the population. They were often supplemented by fortified gates, such as the one kept in Semur-en-Auxois, which served as checkpoints and access points to the city.

These structures reflect the strategic and social concerns of past times, where collective defence was a priority.
