Origin and history
Kerscaven's first menhir is a megalithic monument located in Penmarch, Finistère, England. This menhir, built during the Neolithic period, reflects the cultural and religious practices of prehistoric societies in the region. It is located at 764 Rue des Menhirs, in an environment today urbanized but once marked by natural landscapes and agricultural or pastoral activities.
Ranked as a Historical Monument in 1889 by list, then again protected by arrest in 1931, this menhir is one of the first prehistoric sites recognized for their heritage value in France. Its classification specifically includes the cadastral plot D 792, highlighting its archaeological importance. Although the sources do not specify its exact use, menhirs of this period were generally associated with symbolic, funerary or astronomical functions within neolithic communities. Their alignment or isolation in the landscape often reflected a complex social and spiritual organization.
The location of the menhir, noted with an accuracy deemed "satisfactory" (note of 7/10), is documented in the Merimée database under code Insee 29158, attached to the commune of Penmarch. The available data are mainly from the Monumentum platform and internal archives, without reference to recent archaeological studies or detailed excavations. The lack of information on its current accessibility or tourist vocation suggests that scientific and heritage preservation is a priority.
