Origin and history
Barentin Presbytery is a remarkable building located in the municipality of Barentin, Normandy. It is distinguished by the integration of architectural elements from the façade of a 17th century Rouennais mansion, the hotel of Couseauville, originally located at 74-76 rue de la Ganterie in Rouen. This Louis XIII-style building was severely damaged during the Second World War bombings, leading to the dismantling and winding of its façade at Barentin in 1955. This transfer gives the presbytery a hybrid heritage value, combining local history and Rouennais heritage.
The building was the subject of two successive protections in respect of historical monuments: a first decree of inscription on 31 May 1946, followed by a second on 22 May 1964, which specifically concerns the remains of the façade of the former hotel in Couseauville, now incorporated into the presbytery. These protected elements, identified under cadastral reference D 281, demonstrate the desire to preserve an architectural heritage threatened by the destruction of war. The property today belongs to the municipality of Barentin.
The hotel of Couseauville, whose façade is at the origin of the present presbytery, illustrates 17th century civil architecture in Rouen, marked by the Louis XIII style. This style is characterized by sober lines, balanced symmetries and discreet ornaments, reflecting the emerging classical influence in France. The dismantling and winding of this facade in Barentin, close to 30 km from Rouen, is a rare example of architectural transplantation, an exceptional practice motivated by post-conflict conservation requirements.
