Origin and history

The presbytery of Saint-Symphorien in Puylaroque is a former priory of the diocese of Cahors, whose foundation traditionally dates back to 1011 by the Knights of the Temple. This religious site, located in the Tarn-et-Garonne, is marked by a cruciform chapel with foothills and a rear porch giving access to the adjoining buildings. A miraculous fountain, located at the foot of the rock supporting the chapel, adds to its sacred character.

The history of the priory is marked by his union with the Chartreuse de Cahors in 1409. The church, mentioned in the 13th century, was destroyed during the Hundred Years' War and rebuilt between the late 15th and early 16th centuries, as evidenced by architectural analyses. The site was protected by a wall reinforced by two towers, one of which leaned on a foothill of the church.

Today, the Saint-Symphorian chapel and the presbytery have been inscribed in the Historical Monuments since 1948. Owned by the commune of Puylaroque, the site preserves traces of its medieval past, mixing religious and defensive elements. The location, although documented, remains approximate according to available sources.
