The Presbytery (cad. AB 234): Order of 5 January 1993

Origin and history

The Presbytery of Iracoubo is an emblematic building located in the commune of the same name in French Guiana. This monument, typical of colonial religious architecture, was originally listed as historical monuments by order of 17 July 1991, before being definitively classified on 5 January 1993. Its protected status reflects its heritage and cultural importance in the region.

In the historical context of Guyana, the presbyteries played a central role in the social and religious organization of the communes. They served not only as a residence for priests, but also as a gathering place for the faithful and as a symbol of the influence of the Catholic Church in the overseas territories. In Iracoubo, as elsewhere in Guyana, these buildings reflect the colonial heritage and the adaptation of European traditions to local realities.
