Presbytery (former) (Case B 499): entry by order of 22 October 1992
Origin and history
The presbytery of Beaulieu-en-Argonne is a former religious building built in the 18th century in the commune of Beaulieu-en-Argonne, in the department of Meuse (55). This building, typical of the rural presbyteries of the period, served as a dwelling for the parish priest and reflected the local ecclesiastical organization. Its architecture, though modest, was part of the built landscape of the Lorraine villages, often marked by a strong religious presence and community life centered around the church and its outbuildings.
In the 19th century, the presbytery was transformed into a house, a frequent evolution for this type of building after the political and religious upheavals of the French Revolution. This reconversion illustrates the social and urban changes of the era, where ecclesiastical goods were often re-allocated to civilian uses. Today, the building has been protected as a Historic Monument since 1992, demonstrating its heritage importance in the East.
Its inclusion in the additional inventory underlines the desire to preserve this rural heritage, representative of local and regional history.
