Lived 41 years in this presbytery.
Origin and history
The Presbytery of the Curé d'Ars, located in Ars-sur-Formans in the department of Ain (region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes), is a building built between the late eighteenth century and the early nineteenth century. He was the residence of Saint Jean-Marie Vianney, parish priest of Ars, for forty-one years. Associated with the basilica of Ars, this presbytery preserves objects, personal effects and furniture belonging to the saint, making it a place of memory and pilgrimage.
The building has been partially listed as historical monuments since 3 February 1966, a protection that specifically concerns its facades and roofs. In 2012, he was awarded the Maison des Illustres label, highlighting his heritage importance and his connection to a major figure in Catholicism. Today, the presbytery visits and presents evidence of Jean-Marie Vianney's daily life, reinforcing his historical, religious and cultural role.
The construction of the presbytery was a pivotal period between the 18th and 19th centuries, marked by social and religious transformations in France. In Ars-sur-Formans, as in many rural parishes, the presbytery was a central place, both the parish priest's residence and a space for community life. The presence of Jean-Marie Vianney, canonized in 1925 for his devotion and pastoral commitment, has long marked this place, making it a symbol of the Catholic faith and a high place of visit for the faithful.
