Origin and history

Lamentin Presbytery, located on the island of Basse-Terre in Guadeloupe, is a work by architect Ali Tur, completed in 1931. This building is part of a large urban reconstruction project in the city after the damage caused by Hurricane Okeechobee in September 1928. The Ministry of Colonies entrusted Ali Tur with the task of reconstructing the main civil and religious buildings, ensuring architectural and stylistic homogeneity in the city centre.

The rectangular presbytery includes a ground floor and a floor surrounded by galleries, with a flat roof overflowing to protect the facade from the sun. It replaces a former presbytery rebuilt in 1892, destroyed during the hurricane. Its architecture is distinguished by rounded corners, square poles, and neat details like a plated cross on the balcony and gardeners in guardrails.

Ranked as historical monuments by order of June 8, 2017, the presbytery is part of an urban complex including the Church of the Holy Trinity, the Town Hall, and other buildings designed by Ali Tur. It also benefits from the "Twentieth Century Heritage" label, highlighting its architectural and historical importance in the Guadeloupe landscape.
