Origin and history

The presbytery of Talence is a house built during the second half of the eighteenth century, a period marked by the building of many cartreuses and castles by the bourgeois and Bordeaux notables on their lands. This type of construction reflects the influence of girondian rural architecture, characterized by houses without floors, called cartreuses. The building was used as a presbytery only from 1847, after the completion of the neighbouring church, making it a late testimony of its religious use.

The main façade, oriented to the east, is distinguished by three forebodys, of which the central one is cut out. The bays of this facade are decorated with carved panels: cocks for the central forebody, and garlands of foliage for others. The opposite façade is framed by two perpendicular wings. In the east, there is also an oval basin and a series of quadrangular batteries supporting a fence, supplemented by a small gate. These elements illustrate the care given to the exterior layout, typical of the properties of this time.

The presbytery has been partially protected since 1990, with an inscription concerning the facade and roof of the main body of the building. Today it belongs to an association, but its current status (open to the public, renting, etc.) is not specified in the available sources. Its architecture and history make it a representative example of the houses of notables of the Bordeaux region, linked to the economic and social development of the eighteenth century.
