Origin and history

The Priory of Auzay, located in the commune of Auchay-sur-Vendée (formerly Auzay) in Vendée, is a monument whose origins date back to at least the eleventh century for its church. The eastern parts, including the prioral chapel on the north side of the choir, as well as the vaulted underground cellars, date from the 14th and 15th centuries. These medieval elements bear witness to a religious architecture characteristic of the period, marked by progressive additions and adaptations to liturgical and community needs.

The building underwent later modifications, such as the vaulted nave in the 19th century, reflecting the stylistic and structural evolutions of the later centuries. The priure, partially protected since 1994, includes various spaces: the church itself, the prioral chapel, and a 14th century underground vaulted cellar. These elements illustrate the duality between religious functions and practical uses (such as storage), typical of monastic or prior institutions of the medieval era.

The monument is now shared between communal and private property, with items listed in the Inventory of Historical Monuments. Its exact address, 11 Rue de l'Eglise in Auchay-sur-Vendée, and its Insee code (85009) confirm its anchoring in the Vendée department, within the region Pays de la Loire. The location, noted as "a priori satisfactory" (level 7/10), clearly identifies the site in its historical rural environment.
