Origin and history
The priory of Bragny is a former priory located in the commune of Saint-Vincent-Bragny, Saône-et-Loire, Burgundy-Franche-Comté region. Founded between the 15th and 16th centuries, it preserves a 12th century prioral church dedicated to Saint Martin. This monument illustrates the medieval and post-medieval religious architecture of the region.
The priory was listed as historic monuments on April 4, 1989, recognizing its heritage value. After its religious period, the site was reused as a patronage cinema, reflecting the adaptation of places of worship to modern community uses. Its inscription specifically covers the elements of the priory (cadastre AY 49).
Saint-Vincent-Bragny, like other rural communes of Burgundy, was marked at that time by an agricultural economy and a social life organized around religious institutions. Priories played a central role in spiritual life, but also in education and local self-help. Their subsequent transformation into cultural or social spaces is proof of their lasting attachment to the communal fabric.
