Origin and history
The Priory of La Neuville-sur-Essonne, dependent on the Abbey of Ferrières, found its origins in the 13th century. The current remains, including a main tower and a turret staircase, bear witness to this medieval period. These architectural elements, such as the arches with basket handles and the mouldings of the leggings, reveal a partial reconstruction around 1500, at the hinge of the 15th and 16th centuries.
The turret, crowned with a dome, houses a stone walk still visible today. This monument, classified as a Historical Monument since 1928, illustrates the architectural evolution between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Stylistic details, such as stop profiles, confirm this transition between the two periods.
The remains of the priory, though partial, provide an overview of the importance of religious institutions in this region. In medieval times, priories like this played a central role in local life, serving as places of prayer, reception for pilgrims and economic centres thanks to the land exploited by monks.
