Origin and history

The Priory of Mouzeuil-Saint-Martin, founded in 1050, was initially dependent on the Abbey of Maillezais. Conventual buildings have disappeared over the centuries, with the exception of the prioral house, built around 1540 by Geoffroy d'Estissac, then bishop of Maillezais. This house, built in Renaissance style, bears witness to the religious architecture of the first half of the 16th century, although its monumental fireplace was moved in the 19th century to the Château de la Pélissonnière, at the Boupére.

After the French Revolution, the church and the priory were separated, and the latter was converted into a dwelling house. Today, only the facade of the prioral home is protected under the Historical Monuments (inscription in 1997). The site, located at 4 rue du Prieuré, now belongs to the commune of Mouzeuil-Saint-Martin, in the Vendée department.

The location of the monument is approximate, with an estimated accuracy of 5/10 according to the Merimée bases. Although transformed, the prioral home remains a rare example of the prior architecture of the Renaissance in the Pays de la Loire, marked by its history linked to the bishopric of Maillezais and the post-revolutionary reuse of its heritage.
