Origin and history
The Priory of Vernoil-le-Fourrier is a religious monument located in the municipality of Vernoil-le-Fourrier, Maine-et-Loire (Land of the Loire). Its origins date back at least to the 15th century, as evidenced by the central parts and a West building still preserved. These architectural elements, characteristic of this period, coexist with subsequent additions, reflecting continued occupation of the site.
In the 18th century, the priory underwent major changes: the interior partitions, the chimneys of the central body, and a portal were rebuilt or renovated in the style of the era. Discounts are also added to the northwest. These transformations illustrate the adaptation of the building to the needs and tastes of its occupants, while partially preserving its medieval structure. The site was completed in the 19th century by adjoining buildings, marking a new phase of architectural evolution.
The building was officially recognized for its heritage value in 1975, when its northern façade, corresponding roof and stair turret were listed in the historic monuments inventory. Today, the priory belongs to an association and retains tangible traces of its multiple construction periods, from the Middle Ages to the modern era. Its portal, fireplaces and outbuildings offer a material testimony to its turbulent history.
