Chapel and former priory, including the ground of plots (see AL 74, 75): inscription by order of 30 January 1992

Origin and history

The Priory Saint-Jean-de-Taravon is a religious monument located in the municipality of Volonne, in the department of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. This site, whose precise history remains partially documented, was recognized for its heritage value by an inscription as historical monuments in 1992. The building includes a chapel and the remains of the former priory, protected in their entirety, including surrounding plots.

In the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, priories like Saint-Jean-de-Taravon often played a central role in local life in the Middle Ages. These religious establishments served as places of worship, reception for pilgrims or travellers, and economic centres through the exploitation of surrounding lands. Their architecture generally reflected the resources and artistic influences of their time, while adapting to the spiritual and practical needs of rural communities.
