Origin and history

The priory Saint-Julien, located in Douy (now integrated with Cloyes-les-Trois-Rivières), was mentioned as one of the oldest in the diocese of Chartres in 860. Placed between two arms of the Loir, it is part of a set of six Romanesque chapels marking the river for 80 km, from Saint-Denis-les-Ponts to Troo. These buildings are distinguished by their modest dimensions, their immediate proximity to the watercourse and their medieval frescoes.

The present chapel, dated 11th and 12th centuries, was restored in 1967. This intervention revealed 12th century frescoes in the abside, remarkably preserved and inscribed in the Historical Monuments in 1995. From the priory also remain the old house of the prior, very redesigned in the 19th century, as well as a pigeonmaker. These elements demonstrate the historical importance of the site, linked to local religious and seigneurial life.

The priory is part of a landscape marked by water, Douy meaning "marais" in former French. The site, floodable on 300 hectares, reflects an ancient human occupation adapted to a humid environment. The chapel, with its frescoes and sober architecture, illustrates the provincial Romanesque art and its anchoring in the monastic networks of the Chartrain region.

Today, the priory Saint-Julien is a private property, partially classified. Its history is inseparable from that of Douy, a commune delegated by Cloyes-les-Trois-Rivières since 2017, and the Loir Valley, a historical axis of circulation and religious settlement in the Middle Ages.
