Origin and history
The Prioral House of L'Étoile finds its origins in a Benedictine priory founded by the Abbey of Tournus. In the mid-17th century, it consisted of two houses. In 1765, the prioral house was rebuilt in the form of a farm, marking a major transformation of its use. It was sold as a national property in 1793, after the French Revolution, and today maintains a courtyard with wells in front of a rectangular building.
Inside, the courtyard room features an exceptional panoramic wallpaper, dated before 1830. This wallpaper, produced by the Dufour factory in Paris, represents the banks of the Bosphorus and bears witness to the artistic refinement of the period. It is classified as protected by order of 24 December 2008, stressing its heritage importance.
The monument, located at 475 rue de l'Église in L'Étoile (Jura), is an example of the rural and religious architecture of Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Its history reflects the political and social upheavals of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, including the secularization of ecclesiastical property and its reuse for agricultural or private purposes.
