Origin and history
The Priory of Bardanac, mentioned in 1235, was originally a hospital located at the exit of Bordeaux, welcoming pilgrims going to Santiago de Compostela. He became a priory in the 14th century and was assigned to the Jesuits in 1600. His hospital function ceased in 1751, and the estate, sold as a national property, was acquired in 1810 by Flameric de Lachapelle, who housed the last pilgrims there.
The site preserves a house from the early 16th century, partially demolished in the 19th century, with traces of 16th century murals. These paintings depict landscapes, hunting scenes and other patterns. The chapel, which disappeared between 1820 and 1849, was destroyed during the widening of a road. The entrance porch, still visible, bears witness to its past.
Ranked a Historic Monument in 1998, the Priory of Bardanac is now a private property. Its L-shaped house features remarkable architectural elements: arcades, door windows, old doors and a original frame. These remains illustrate its historical role in welcoming travellers and patients on the compostellane road.
