Origin and history

The priory of Le Gravier is a religious building located in Contigné, in the department of Maine-et-Loire, in the heart of the Pays de la Loire. Dating from the 17th and 18th centuries, it embodies architecture and the spiritual life of Anjou under the Old Regime. Its inscription as a historical monument in 1977 highlights its heritage value, especially for its facades, roofs and chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

July 2, 1732 marked a key date in his history: the solemn blessing of his domestic chapel by Jacques Le Royer, parish priest of Morannes, in the presence of several clergymen from the Diocese of Angers. This event, authorized by the local bishop, brings together priests from nearby parishes, illustrating the importance of the priory as a place of worship and religious gathering in the region. The archives mention in particular the participation of François Loriot, Gabriel Gasnier, or even Jean Galiard de Saint-Martin, reflecting the ecclesiastical network Angelvin of the time.

Available sources, including the Merimée base and Wikipedia, specify that the priory is now located at 18 Le Gravier, in the territory of the commune of Hauts-d'Anjou. Although its state of conservation and current uses (visit, rental) are not detailed, its heritage inscription guarantees the protection of its major architectural elements, such as the facades and the chapel. This monument thus offers a material testimony of piety and religious organization in Anjou in the 17th and 18th centuries.
