Origin and history

Hotel de Garidel is an 18th-century mansion located in Moulins, in the Allier department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Built in the first half of the 18th century, it represents a typical example of the Regency architecture, with a classical facade on street consisting of an elevated ground floor, a noble floor and fitted attic. The facade, rhythmized by curved flat-banded bays, is decorated with wrought iron balconies and oculus topped with lion masks.

Inside, the living room on the first floor preserves a parquet Versailles and a fireplace Regence painted stone, carved with rinceaux, eagles and rock motifs. An alcove room under the attic features a stucco entrance decorated with heads and rinceaux, as well as a palm-decorated legging fireplace. These elements, along with the staircase and its ironwork, have been protected as historical monuments since 5 March 1992.

The hotel is associated with the family of Garidel, of Italian origin and established in France since the 14th century. Joachim de Garidel, Marquis de Thoron, lived there after his marriage in 1870 with Valentine du Bouys, whose family resided in the hotel. The Marquis, a major figure in the Charoese farming industry, presided over the Allier Agricultural Society for 64 years. After several changes of owners, including Baron Durye and UDAF, the hotel was restored in 2013 by Patrick Guibal, who restored it to its original state.

Today, the hotel of Garidel, private property, is visited on request for groups with a historical or cultural vocation. Its architecture and history are a remarkable testimony to the bourbon heritage and the influence of local noble families in the 18th century.
