Origin and history
The mansion at 14 and 16 rue du Tribel in Bar-le-Duc is an urban U-plan building built in the mid-18th century. It is distinguished by its garden-side architecture, marked by curved bays, horned ionic pilasters and a triangular pediment decorated with rock decorations evoking arts and commerce. The basements are home to a network of cellars with bread ovens and fireplaces, while the croup structure of the attic and the interior distributions date for most of this period.
At the end of the 19th century, the hotel underwent major changes: the south wing was demolished, a direct passage to the garden was created, and a pavilion was added. The terrace is transformed, and a greenhouse, equipped with a walkway on the ridge, adds to the garden. The house, on the other hand, retains its original 18th century appearance. These changes reflect the adaptation of the building to the tastes and needs of the time.
The ensemble, including the body of passage between the courtyard and the garden, the 19th century facades and roofs, as well as the garden with its terrace walls and greenhouse, has been protected by an inscription to the Historical Monuments since 4 March 2003. Owned by a private company, it bears witness to the architectural and social evolution of a private hotel between the former Regime and the industrial era.
