Origin and history

The Hôtel des Quatre Saisons is a private hotel located in Bourg-en-Bresse, in the department of Ain, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Built between the second half of the 15th century and the first half of the 16th century, it illustrates the civil architecture of this period of transition between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Its spiral staircase, typical of the buildings of this period, is a remarkable architectural element.

The interior staircase, as well as the facade and roof on the street, were listed as historical monuments by order of 10 September 1947. This protection highlights the heritage importance of this building, which is now owned by a private company. The hotel is located at 7 rue Clavagry, in the city centre of Bourg-en-Bresse.

At the time of its construction, Bourg-en-Bresse was a dynamic city, marked by its administrative and commercial role in the Bresse region. Private hotels, such as the Four Seasons, reflected the social status of their owners, often notables or wealthy merchants. These urban residences served as both a place of life and a place of representation, embodying the prestige of their occupants in a hierarchical society.
