Origin and history

The Camalon property, located in Saint-André on Réunion Island, is an architectural and industrial testimony of the 19th century. This site, which has been included in the additional inventory of Historic Monuments since 21 March 1996, retains the remains of an old farm dedicated to the processing of aloe, a plant used for the manufacture of ropes intended for navigation. The inscription covers in particular the entrance gate, the driveway, the old kitchen, as well as the remains of the factory and the archaeological traces present on the estate.

The estate includes a large water reservoir, rolling ponds and shops, key elements of the former plant. The current house was rebuilt on the foundations of an older building, destroyed by a cyclone. This site illustrates La Réunion's economic history, marked by export cultures and climate challenges.

The archaeological remains and the industrial structures still visible offer an overview of the agricultural and craft techniques of the time. The Camalon property, with its portal, driveway and related buildings, also reflects the typical spatial organization of the great 19th century colonial farms on the island.
