Origin and history

The public attic of L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is a building built in the 4th quarter of the 18th century, more precisely commissioned in 1779. It was intended for public storage of grains and cereals, meeting the needs of the local community in a context where food supply was a major concern. Located in the city centre, close to the parish church, it is distinguished by its two-level structure, typical of the utility buildings of the period.

The monument has been listed as historic monuments since May 15, 1974, recognizing its heritage importance. Owned by the municipality, it underwent a major conversion in 2020 with the installation of the "Digital Grenier", a project combining heritage and innovation. The latter, labeled "French Tech", now hosts companies specialized in the digitisation of old films, web radio and digital archives, while serving as a versatile space for conferences, workshops and seminars.

Since 2012, L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue has been developing an economic strategy based on heritage and new technologies. The digital attic, occupying 150 m2 of the premises, embodies this dynamic by uniting digital and heritage actors. It shares space with the tourism office, thus strengthening its anchor in local life. The building, located in Place de la Liberté, remains a symbol of the adaptation of historical monuments to contemporary challenges.
