Bridge linking the village to the N.N. 117: inscription by order of 14 April 1948
Origin and history
The bridge of Espéraza is a medieval building located in the municipality of Espéraza, in the department of Aude, in the Occitan region. Its construction dates back to a period prior to 1603, when it was restored to rebuild a pillar and the north ark, in order to improve the passage of waters during floods. This bridge, with three uneven arches, has a characteristic structure with triangular spur pillars and device stone vaults.
The arches of the bridge are composed of two sets of vaults: a narrow lower vault, corresponding to the old width of the passage, and higher lateral vaults, added to widen the passage. The higher lateral vaults, more recent, are distinguished by their patina and abnormal connection to the spurs of the batteries. The whole is built of device stone, with larger head-rests, typical of the construction techniques of the time.
Listed under the title of historical monuments by order of 14 April 1948, the bridge of Espéraza connects the village to the national road 117. Its architecture reflects successive adaptations to meet local traffic needs and hydrological constraints. The changes made over the centuries, such as the addition of side vaults, reflect the evolution of construction techniques and the uses of the bridge.
The bridge is a representative example of medieval works of art in the region, combining structural robustness and functional adaptations. Its inscription in historic monuments underscores its heritage importance and its role in local history. Today, there remains a key element of the Espéraza landscape, bearing witness to the medieval past and the architectural know-how of the time.
