Gallo-Roman bridge: classification by decree of 9 March 1932

Origin and history

The Gallo-Roman bridge, located on the municipalities of Sommerécourt and Outremecourt (Haute-Marne), is an ancient structure built to allow the Roman road linking Trier (present-day Germany) to Langres (France) to cross the Mouzon. Also known as Pont-five-Parts because of its five arches, it illustrates the road and hydraulic engineering of the Gallo-Roman period in this region of eastern Gaul.

Ranked as historical monuments by decree of 9 March 1932, this bridge bears witness to the strategic importance of the axes of communication under the Roman Empire. Its preservation until the present day makes it a rare example of Roman civil architecture in Champagne-Ardenne, although its current state and its geographical accuracy remain considered mediocre (note 5/10 according to sources).

Owned by the municipality of Sommerécourt, the bridge does not seem open to organized visits, and its current use is not specified in the available sources. Its classification, however, reflects its heritage value, linked to its historical role in the ancient network and its characteristic architectural structure.
